Hellcat, Hair loss, and a Badass Woman

March 26, 2015 Jennifer Tallerico

Hair-- it’s a defining feature of our biological class.  It is possibly the ultimate accessory.  Everyone has it but they rarely think about it unless it frustrates or annoys them.  Each person has a very different approach when it comes to managing it.  Cultures around the world revere it for a multitude of different reasons.

What happens when it is just not an option for you?  Society places a lot of value on it and even makes assumptions based on your personal style.  No matter the reason, those who alter their appearance are subject to questioning, random opinions, and even ridicule.  Some could even interpret it as a unhealthy or a sign of weakness.

How does someone begin to confront this mindset?  The answer is with tremendous strength and amazing support.  This is where Eva shines.  She was diagnosed with  genetic alopecia that causes loss in the scalp area.  She tried to keep her hairstyle as long as she could mainly for appearances.  In the end, she realized that it was just hair and living without it would not change who she is.

She took her transition one step further and decided to take part in a documentary about her struggle.  I was honored when she chose me to be there as she, and her loved ones, shaved their heads in my Palatka Florida downtown historic studio.  The images are so emotionally stirring.  A moment shared with her husband, the look on her face when her transformation was complete, and the stunning “after” photo of a glowing young woman.  She is an inspiration.  I have no doubt her positive attitude and confidence will help her change minds on the definition of femininity.
